Our History

Phillips Jewelers has a long standing history of service and quality. Grandfather Frederick Albion started his orignial jewelry and watchmaking store in Niagara Falls, New York in 1909. Two of his sons later opened their own stores in the Falls also. Jim, a son-in-law, started a store in Warren, PA and grandson Fred started a store in Phoenix, Arizona. Altogether, four of his sons, two son-in-laws, and six grandchildren became involved in the jewelry business.

Philip Colaprete graduated from the Elgin Watchmakers College. Together, Phil and his wife Caroline (Frederick’s daugter) started their own store, Phillips Jewelers, in Johnsonburg in 1948. The store remained there for 20 years until, in 1968, Phillips Jewelers became part of the then new St. Marys Shopping Center where it was located for 21 years.

Art Colaprete joined his parents in 1970, adding Gemology and jewelry repairs. He completed many G.I.A. courses before becoming a graduate gemologist in 1978. Phillips Jewelers joined the American Gem Society in 1979 and Art became a certifed gemologist by the A.G.S. in 1981.  Art’s wife, Teddi joined the firm in 1979 until her death.

All of us at Phillips Jewelers wish to thank all the people of Johnsonburg and Saint Marys, all of the people of Elk, Cameron, McKean, Jefferson, and Clearfield counties, and our many, many fine customers for all these 65+ years.
